Commerce secretary nominee commits to leaving the agency under current department jurisdiction.
President Donald Trump nominated scientist Neil Jacobs for administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Jacobs was the acting NOAA administrator during President Trump’s first term.
The president has previously suggested privatizing or reassigning the functions of the agency. The NOAA is currently within the Department of Commerce, and Commerce Secretary nominee Howard Lutnick said he would not seek to break up the organization.
“I want to do it right, and right now Commerce is doing it right, so I have no interest in separating it,” Lutnick said in response to questioning during his nomination hearing last week.
