USMC Seeks Feedback to Strengthen Suicide Prevention Measures

The survey seeks to tailor safety programs and messaging to better support service members and their families.

The U.S. Marine Corps is collecting input from active-duty Marines on its programs designed to limit access to items that can facilitate self-harm, such as firearms and medications. Through a voluntary survey open until January 31, the Corps seeks feedback on the awareness, preferences, and effectiveness of “lethal means safety” initiatives. This effort is part of broader suicide prevention strategies as the military grapples with rising suicide rates, which increased 12 percent in 2023, with 62 Marines among the 363 active-duty members who took their lives.

“Survey results will enable us to tailor suicide-prevention efforts and develop messaging and programs that will be most relevant and impactful to our Marines, Sailors, and families,” wrote Major Melissa Spencer of Marine Corps Headquarters.

The survey results will guide the creation of customized plans and messaging to enhance safety practices and outreach for Marines and their families. The Corps plans to also develop a timeline for program improvements based on the survey data. Suicide prevention remains a top priority, with resources such as hotline information, counseling referrals, and tips for securing firearms already available.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for Secretary Pete Hegseth as he heads the Department of Defense.
  • For Commandant Eric Smith to be discerning as he oversees the U.S. Marine Corps.
