Distinct Grace

But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.        Romans 11:6

Salvation is a completely free gift of the grace of God. Your works have nothing to do with it; those works do not cause you to deserve God’s grace. There is nothing you can do to attain it. Likewise, there is nothing you can do to keep it! It’s all about the Father and His Son, Jesus. This grace has been freely given to all who will accept it. God’s grace is amazing! You could not have received it by any good works you may have done. The King James version of today’s verse clarifies further: “If by grace, then it is no more of works; otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then there is no more grace; otherwise, work is no more work.”

Titus 3:5 confirms this, “He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his mercy.” One commentary states, “If it were on the basis of works, God’s grace would not be what it really is – free and undeserved. Human effort and God’s grace are therefore mutually exclusive ways to salvation.”

Professor of Theology Dr. John Tweeddale reminds you that good works are a part of the life of a Christian. “Just because we are not saved according to our works doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be concerned about pursuing a life of joyful obedience to God’s Word. Jesus emphatically states, ‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments’ (John 14:15).” He adds, “Good works are the result of God’s pattern for the Christian life. We need not wonder what God requires of us. He told us in His Word. Good works are deeds done in conformity to God’s Word.”

An old hymn encourages you to trust and obey. You trust in God’s grace and love for you for your saving and your keeping; then you obey Him according to His Word by displaying His works of love and grace in your life. “While we do His good will, He abides with us still, And with all who will trust and obey.”
