Danny Werfel
Commissioner, Internal Revenue Service
Daniel I. Werfel was born in 1971. He earned an undergraduate degree from Cornell University, a Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina School of Law, and a master’s degree in public policy from Duke University.
He served in the Office of Management and Budget and was later a trial attorney for the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department. During President George W. Bush’s administration, he was Deputy Controller of the OMB.
President Barack Obama nominated Werfel to be OMB Controller. He was confirmed by the Senate and assumed that position in October 2009. He was later appointed Acting Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service by President Obama.
After working in the private sector for eight years, Werfel was nominated by President Biden to be Commissioner of Internal Revenue. He was confirmed by the Senate and assumed his position in March 2023 for a term that will end in November 2027.
Werfel is married to Beth. and they have two children.

The Internal Revenue Service is sending roughly 1 million taxpayers who did not receive stimulus checks during the COVID-19 pandemic total of approximately $2.4 billion in payments. The agency determined who had not received the Economic Impact Payments (EIP) based on 2021 tax returns that did not claim the Recovery Rebate Credit.
“The IRS continues to work hard to make improvements and help taxpayers,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. “These payments are an example of our commitment to go the extra mile for taxpayers.“
He continued, “Looking at our internal data, we realized that one million taxpayers overlooked claiming this complex credit when they were actually eligible. To minimize headaches and get this money to eligible taxpayers, we’re making these payments automatic, meaning these people will not be required to go through the extensive process of filing an amended return to receive it.”
