Tesla Issues Recall after NHTSA Opens Investigation into Self Driving Crashes

12 incidents were reported where vehicles ran into posts or parked cars due to a software glitch.

Tesla issued a recall of 239,000 vecles after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened another investigation. The agency was following up on 12 reports of the automaker’s self-driving program malfunctioning.

The reports claim that vehicles struck posts and parked cars after activating Tesla’s “Actually Smart Summon” technology. NHTSA officials say the vehicles struck objects because the users had “too little reaction time to avoid a crash, either with the available line of sight or releasing the phone app button, which stops the vehicle’s movement.”

The manufacturer said that a potential short circuit in the computer board might disable rearview cameras. Tesla said that a digital update may resolve the issue and any computer replacements needed would be free of charge.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For NHTSA officials as they monitor safety issues with automobiles.
  • For Secretary Buttigieg and Deputy Administrator Shulman as they oversee investigations and recalls.
