House Speaker Expects Debit Limit Raise in Upcoming Policy Bill

Negotiations begin after party leaders assume new roles in the Senate.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said raising the debt limit will be the primary goal of the next reconciliation bill.

In a conference, Speaker Johnson reiterated that “the intention is to handle the debt limit in reconciliation.” He added that his party in both chambers will “then get to determine the details of that.”

However, some conservatives have voiced hesitance over raising the government’s debt limit, seeking budget cuts to avoid another increase.

“How we deal with the debt limit is currently unresolved,” said Senator John Cornyn of Texas. “We’re going to be looking to see what the House is capable of passing.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for Speaker Johnson as he seeks to raise the nation’s debt limit to facilitate the president’s agenda.
  • For Senate Majority Leader Thune to be discerning in government funding negotiations.
