Senator Cruz Proposes Constitutional Amendment for Term Limits

Representative Norman introduced the resolution in the House.

Senator Ted Cruz of Texas introduced a joint resolution in the Senate for a Constitutional amendment proposing term limits for members of Congress. Senator Cruz originally introduced a proposal for term limits in 2021, but it stalled in the judiciary committee. This time, eleven other senators co-sponsored the measure.

Congressman Ralph Norman of South Carolina introduced a similar resolution in the House of Representatives with 33 of his colleagues co-sponsoring the measure.

“With the evident abuse of power that has taken place in Congress the notion of term limits is basic common sense,” Representative Norman stated. “Many of my colleagues have drifted so far from the reality of the people they serve by turning ‘representative of the people’ into a lifelong career. Members must be willing to not only enact laws, but return to their respective districts to live under them.”

The resolution proposes three terms, 2 years each, for representatives and two 6-year terms for senators. An amendment requires a two-thirds majority in each chamber of Congress or a Constitutional Convention by the states, with three-fourths of the states ratifying the measure.
