House Oversight Committee Schedules Hearing on SSA Telework Policy

The SHOW UP Act would return federal agencies’ in-office work schedules to pre-pandemic hours.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer of Kentucky scheduled a hearing to discuss the number of remote work hours used by employees of the Social Security Administration (SSA), sending a letter to request the agency’s former administrator Martin O’Malley testify before the committee.

O’Malley implemented the SSA’s remote work policy in 2020, transitioning the agency to partial remote work after the pandemic. Chair Comer believes that SSA employees’ overuse of this policy has led to failures within the agency, citing a report released by President Biden’s administration indicating that SSA employees spend less than half their work hours, on average, in office.

“This failure to show up runs parallel to failures at SSA to accomplish its mission,” Chair Comer wrote. “SSA is failing to adequately serve the American people, as SSA disability determination processing times on average have increased since fiscal year 2020.”

The Stopping Home Office Work’s Unproductive Problems (SHOW UP) Act has been introduced to return federal employees’s schedules to pre-pandemic office hours. President-elect Trump stated last month, “If people don’t come back to work, come back into the office, they’re going to be dismissed.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For federal legislators as they seek to determine the effectiveness of federal remote work.
  • For the president-elect and his appointees as they prepare for the transition of administrations.
