DOJ Implements Rule Protecting Americans from Foreign Data Collection

The move is intended to prevent adversaries, such as Russia and Iran, from purchasing bulk data.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) recently issued its final rule to prevent “countries of concern” from accessing bulk data collected from Americans.

Personal information such as names, birth dates, and email addresses are valuable and habitually collected, purchased, and sold by social media companies and data brokers. Almost anyone is able to buy this information, including the U.S. government which does so regularly for its own intelligence operations.

The department’s final rule prohibits any company from selling bulk data collections on American citizens to a list of U.S. adversaries, which include Russia, China, and Iran. This final rule will take effect in 90 days.

“This powerful new national security program is designed to ensure that Americans’ personal data is no longer permitted to be sold to hostile foreign powers, whether through outright purchase or other means of commercial access,” said Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Assistant Attorney General Olsen to receive God’s direction as he facilitates the endeavor to protect Americans’ private information from adversarial nations.
  • For Attorney General Garland and DOJ officials as they propose rules to increase information security.
