Energy Department Announces Funding for Nuclear Fuel Recycling Research

Supports early-stage research into undeveloped technology

The Department of Energy (DOE) announced $10 million in funding last week for early-stage research projects focused on nuclear fuel recycling solutions.

There are currently few options for recycling uranium once it has been used for nuclear energy, and most nuclear energy processes are only able to extract 5 percent of the element’s estimated energy potential. If a recycling process were discovered to make use of the 95 percent of remaining energy it would significantly reduce the amount of uranium necessary for nuclear energy.

“Recycling the nation’s used nuclear fuel offers untapped potential,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy Michael Goff. “Resolving the technical and economic challenges of recycling in a manner that meets our nonproliferation goals has the potential to increase significantly the sustainability of nuclear energy, create more jobs, and enhance our energy security.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Goff to seek God’s direction as he oversees the Office of Nuclear Energy.
  • For U.S. energy officials as they support the research to develop uranium recycling in the nuclear energy field.
