Transportation Department Issues Final Pedestrian Right-Of-Way Standards

Adopts Disabilities Act guidelines laid out by the U.S. Access Board.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) published its final rule this month to fully adopt the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board’s guidelines for pedestrian facilities in the public right-of-way (PROWAG) as recommended by Americans with Disabilities Act advisors. These guidelines provide guidance for states and local agencies on designing transit stops and facilitating accessibility without having to evaluate sources or independently determine the designs.

“DOT’s adoption of the PROWAG means that there will no longer be a need for each state or local agency to evaluate sources of guidance and make an independent determination on how to design transit stops and other facilities to achieve accessibility for different types of users,” the department stated. “Users of the transportation system will also benefit from uniformity in accessibility-related design standards.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Buttigieg and Transportation Department personnel as they seek to provide national guidelines for states and municipalities to follow for disability access.
  • For U.S. transportation officials as they seek to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
