The sites commemorate marginalized communities’ contributions to U.S. history.
Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland announced the designation of 19 new National Historic Landmarks (NHLs) this month, commemorating sites that represent the diverse history of the U.S. These landmarks highlight the contributions of marginalized communities, alongside advancements in technology, landscape design, and art. The National Park Service (NPS) collaborate with local stewards to maintain the recognition, acknowledging the historical, architectural, or archaeological significance of these sites.
“As America’s storyteller, it is our privilege at the Department of the Interior, through the National Park Service, to tell our nation’s history and honor the many historical chapters and heroic communities that brought us to where we all are today,” said Secretary Haaland.
With these new additions, the NHL list now includes over 2,600 landmarks of national significance. The NPS also updated documentation for 14 existing NHLs and withdrew three designations due to demolition or destruction.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Secretary Haaland to seek God’s direction as she oversees the Interior Department.
- For Director Chuck Sams to be discerning as he heads the National Park Service.
