Tim Kaine
U.S. Senator from Virginia
Timothy Michael Kaine was born in February 1958 in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri and received a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. In the midst of his law studies, he took a break to help Jesuit missionaries in a Catholic school in Honduras.
Kaine clerked for a judge on the Eleventh Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. He joined a private firm and later became another firm’s director. He taught legal ethics at the University of Richmond School of Law.
Kaine was elected mayor of Richmond. He was then elected Lt. Governor of Virginia and later became Governor. He chaired the Democratic National Committee before winning a sit in the U.S. Senate in 2012. He was the vice presidential candidate in former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s unsuccessful presidential campaign in 2016.
He is married to state judge Anne Holton, and they have three children. He is Catholic.

Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia introduced legislation to require the approval of Congress for the reclassification of federal employees. He requested unanimous consent for the Saving the Civil Service Act.
Senator Kaine said it would protect against “attempts in recent years to erode the independence of the federal civil service.” He claimed that federal employees need to be protected from “political retaliation.” He said that this would enable workers would be able to better implement federal laws and policies.
Senator Kaine’s office expressed concern last year that as many as 50,000 federal employees could be fired under reclassification to Schedule F under President Trump’s executive order in October 2020, which removes civil service protections and due process rights.
