The number is double the ”core“ assets previously reported.
The Department of Defense announced that around 2,000 troops are deployed to Syria, more than double the 900 personnel considered “core“ assets in the region. The Pentagon spokesman said the additional troops are “considered temporary rotational forces,” and will be active in the area for 30 to 90 days while the Syrian government goes through its period of unrest and reorganization.
Pentagon Press Secretary Major General Pat Ryder urged Congress to appropriate funding for the military, as a shutdown would interrupt pay for the troops.
“In the event of a lapse in funding and a shutdown of the government, the Department of Defense will continue to carry out our fundamental responsibility and mission to defend our nation and the American people,” General Ryder said.
“Military personnel on active duty — including reserve component personnel on federal active duty — would continue to report for duty and carry out assigned missions worldwide to defend our nation and protect our national security interests,” he added.
