New initiatives address escalating drone incursions near U.S. bases and protect critical assets worldwide.
The Pentagon announced a new strategy to counter the growing threat of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) following numerous incursions near U.S. bases. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced the creation of a Joint Counter-Small UAS Office and a Warfighter Senior Integration Group to address these challenges. The plan emphasized understanding enemy drone tactics, launching offensive measures, enhancing defenses, increasing counter-drone system production, and prioritizing this issue in future force planning.
“Unmanned systems pose both an urgent and enduring threat to U.S. personnel, facilities, and assets overseas,” the Pentagon stated. “By producing a singular Strategy for Countering Unmanned Systems, the Secretary and the Department are orienting around a common understanding of the challenge and a shared approach to addressing it.”
Drone incursions and attacks, including those by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in the Red Sea, have disrupted vital shipping routes and caused billions in global economic damage. U.S. responses to these low-cost drones are costly, with missiles and equipment losses far exceeding the expense of adversarial UAS. Recent incidents at sensitive locations like Langley Air Force Base and the Nevada National Security Site underscore the need for a standardized counter-drone protocol. The strategy intends to consolidate efforts across the Department of Defense to address this urgent and enduring threat effectively.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Defense Secretary Austin and Pentagon officials as they respond to UAS incursions to military installation airspace.
- For wisdom for the president and his advisors as drone usage increases across the nation and the globe.
