President Calls for Gun Reform on Sandy Hook 12th Anniversary

He urges Congress to support universal background checks and red flag laws.

President Joe Biden again called for federal gun reform on Saturday to mark the anniversary of the 2012 mass shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School.

“The legacy of this tragedy is one of great loss — but also hope,” he stated.

The president offered his condolences to all families who have lost loved ones to violence, and highlighted federal actions already taken to prevent further violence. One of his examples was the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which Congress passed in 2022 to implement background checks for anyone between the ages of 18-21 purchasing a firearm. However, President Biden stated that “more must be done,” calling on Congress to also implement universal background checks, required gun storage, and red flag laws.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For discernment for federal legislators as they consider the president’s call for gun reform.
  • For the president and administration officials as they seek to prevent mass shootings.
