U.S. Officials Meet with Syrian Factions

Diplomats and defense officials engage after rebels topple the regime.

Officials from the Department of Defense and the Department of State traveled to Syria soon after rebels overthrew the regime of former President Bashar Assad on Sunday.

“Senior officials from this department are fanning out through the region as we speak, working with counterparts on how the United States can help support the Syrian people as they decide their own path for the future,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said at the State Department on Monday.

“This moment presents a historic opportunity, but it also carries considerable risks,” Secretary Blinken warned. “History shows how quickly moments of promise can descend into conflict and violence.”

Humanitarian officials also rushed to the country, in an effort to curb the waves of instability likely to follow this historic event.

“We want to make sure that there isn’t a humanitarian catastrophe,” said U.S. Deputy United Nations Ambassador Robert Wood. “So, we’re going to be working over the coming days and weeks to try to make sure that we can ensure all of those things happen.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Blinken as he oversees diplomatic efforts in and regarding Syria.
  • For wisdom for U.S. ambassadors as they engage with international ministers on humanitarian aid.
