U.S. Senator from South Dakota
Marion Michael Rounds was born in October 1954 in Huron, South Dakota. He earned a bachelor’s in political science from South Dakota State University. He served as a partner in an insurance and real estate firm.
Rounds served as a state senator until term limits required he give up his seat. He was then elected governor of South Dakota and won reelection. Rounds won his Senate seat in 2014 and was reelected in 2020.
Rounds is widowed of Jean, with whom he had four children. He is Catholic.

Senator Mike Rounds of South Dakota introduced legislation to abolish the Department of Education. The Returning Education to Our States Act would eliminate the department that was formed under President Jimmy Carter.
Senator Rounds’ bill would transfer special needs education to the Department of Health and Human Services, the office of Indian Education would move to the Interior Department, and all federal financial aid would be managed by the Treasury Department. The Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice would handle complaints related to grants or aid programs.
“The federal Department of Education has never educated a single student, and it’s long past time to end this bureaucratic Department that causes more harm than good,” said Senator Rounds. “We all know local control is best when it comes to education. … Local school boards and state Departments of Education know best what their students need, not unelected bureaucrats in Washington, D.C.
