Judge Sean Jordan
Eastern Texas U.S. District Court
Sean Daniel Jordan was born in 1965 in New York City. He earned his undergraduate degree and Juris Doctor from the University of Texas, Austin. He served as an infantryman and paratrooper in the U.S. Army.
Jordan served as Principal Deputy Solicitor General for the State of Texas before entering private practice.
Jordan was nominated by President Donald Trump to a seat on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas in 2019. The Senate confirmed him after invoking cloture in July and Jordan received his commission in August 2019.
In the News…
Judge Sean Jordan of the Eastern Texas U.S. District Court ruled that the U.S. Department of Labor lacks the statutory authority under the Administrative Procedure Act to raise minimum salary requirements. The department had released a final rule under the Fair Labor Standards Act increasing white-collar salaries and overtime exemptions earlier this year.
Judge Jordan’s ruling vacated the requirements to increase minimum salaries, nullifying the national increase nationwide that began July 1 of this year and had a deadline of January 1, 2025.
The judge wrote that the department’s rules “attempt to dramatically increase the minimum salary level” and “to install a mechanism that automatically updates the minimum salary requirements to even higher levels every three years.” He noted that this “exceed[s] the Department’s authority to define and delimit the relevant terms.”
