Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! – Psalm 107:8
Do you live a thankful life? Would the people who know you best say that you seem to have a calm, appreciative spirit? Is your life fueled by the knowledge that God loves you? Do you show courage in the face of adversity? What are you grateful for?
If you read the entirety of Psalm 107, you will see, as Matthew Henry says in his commentary, “The psalmist specifies some of the most common calamities of human life, and shows how God succors those that labor under them, in answer to their prayers.” Henry cites issues of banishment and dispersion, captivity and imprisonment, sickness, danger, and distress. “These are put for all similar perils, in which those that cry unto God have ever found him a very present help.” The psalm is a reminder that, in your every circumstance, God is there. Therefore, you are to be thankful to Him for his steadfast, solid, ever-present love for you.
And you are not to keep your gratitude to yourself. The remainder of today’s verse reminds you that, as Henry says, “It is expected of those who receive mercy from God that they return praise to him. We must acknowledge God’s goodness to the children of men as well as to the children of God, to others as well as to ourselves.” So ask yourself, do those around you know of your gratitude to God? Pray that your relationship with Almighty God might be transparent.

Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever!
2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,
whom he has redeemed from trouble
3 and gathered in from the lands,
from the east and from the west,
from the north and from the south.
31 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
32 Let them extol him in the congregation of the people,
and praise him in the assembly of the elders.
33 He turns rivers into a desert,
springs of water into thirsty ground,
34 a fruitful land into a salty waste,
because of the evil of its inhabitants.
35 He turns a desert into pools of water,
a parched land into springs of water.
36 And there he lets the hungry dwell,
and they establish a city to live in;
37 they sow fields and plant vineyards
and get a fruitful yield.
38 By his blessing they multiply greatly,
and he does not let their livestock diminish.
Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things;
let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord.
