Files funding request after Congress returned to session.
The White House filed a request for $100 billion from Congress this week to support the rebuilding of communities recovering from natural disasters. Of that funding, $40 billion would refill FEMA’s disaster relief fund, which was exhausted after Hurricanes Helene and Milton hit the East Coast. The remaining funding will be allocated to several dozen other agencies, which manage emergency aid for housing, transportation, farmland, and infrastructure.
Speaker Mike Johnson said that legislators will “go to work” evaluating the disaster aid request, noting that estimating recovery costs is “a deliberate process.” He added, “We’re going to make sure we deliver for the hurricane victims and the people that have suffered from that.”
White House budget director Shalanda Young said President Biden’s administration expects to get a disaster aid package enacted “with strong bipartisan and bicameral support.”
