President Biden promises a “smooth transition” to the Trump administration.
President Joe Biden met with President-elect Donald Trump in the Oval Office on Wednesday, holding a traditional post-election meeting to signify the peaceful transition of power in the United States.
“Congratulations, and I look forward to having a smooth transition,” President Biden said as they sat in front of the fireplace.
“It will be as smooth as it can get, and I very much appreciate that, Joe,” President Trump replied. “Politics is tough, and in many cases it’s not a nice world, but it is a nice world today.”
After reporters were directed to leave the room, the two leaders spoke for two hours. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre described the meeting as “very cordial, very gracious” and said that the president-elect “came with a detailed set of questions.”
First lady Jill Biden offered a similar gesture of congratulations, presenting Trump a handwritten note addressed to Melania Trump that expressed her good will to her counterpart.
