Nearly 300 homes still damaged by glacial outburst in August.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) issued a disaster declaration for Juneau, Alaska this week, issuing immediate federal protocol to help renters and homeowners recover from historic flooding.
In August, the nearby Suicide Glacier had a major outburst, flooding the river and damaging hundreds of homes. Though glacier outbursts are not uncommon, the size and timing of this outburst was unusual, occurring less than a year after the previous outburst.
“The Mendenhall River gauge crested at 15.99 feet early in the morning on August 6, 2024, exceeding the previous record of 14.97 feet which was set just last year,” stated the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “This was the largest flow that has occurred along the Mendenhall River system in historical record.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For NOAA officials as they track the data on glaciers and rivers flooding.
- For Acting Secretary Todman to receive God’s guidance as she heads HUD.
