God’s Love is Solid

Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!       Psalm 107:1

In grammar school science classes, you learned that matter takes three forms: gas, liquid, and solid.  Physicists who study quantum mechanics and the solid state, looking at the atomic properties of solids, understand that what appears solid actually is not. The Physics Stack Exchange says no item Is truly solid.” In its subatomic state “you will find vast amounts of space, containing electrons, [protons, neutrons and a nucleus] all relatively enormous distances away from each other.” Subatomic particles actually want to pull away from the other particles and distance themselves from each other. According to Morningside University, there is a “strong force,” which builds even smaller particles like quarks and glutons, that is responsible for holding things together.

In today’s verse, when the psalmist speaks of God’s love being steadfast, he is saying it is fixed, stable, unshifting, immovable, and solid. Psalm 107 is a liturgical psalm that records four pictures where God’s steadfast love was directed toward His people, forgiving them, redeeming them, saving them, restoring them, and rescuing them. The psalm concludes by saying, “Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord” (verse 43).

Theologian Matthew Henry says that understanding the lovingkindness of the Lord assures you of God’s goodness, and that being observant of God’s provision reminds you to be obedient to Him and, above all, to be thankful. As hymn writer Stuart Hamblen wrote, “It is no secret what God can do; what He’s done for others, He’ll do for you.” Give Him thanks today that His love for you is steadfast, solid and immovable. Pray for American believers to share God’s steadfast love with others, particularly those who have not yet experienced it.

Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens,
    your faithfulness to the clouds.
6 Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;
    your judgments are like the great deep;
    man and beast you save, O Lord.

7 How precious is your steadfast love, O God!
    The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
8 They feast on the abundance of your house,
    and you give them drink from the river of your delights.
9 For with you is the fountain of life;
    in your light do we see light.

10 Oh, continue your steadfast love to those who know you,
    and your righteousness to the upright of heart!
