VERSE OF THE WEEK
By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. – 1 John 3:16
Honoring the Sacrifice
Historic eras come and go. Memories surge and fade, but wounds can take a long time to heal, and scars linger. Veterans from America’s “Greatest Generation” returned from the Second World War seventy-eight years ago. Another generation of U.S. soldiers came home from Vietnam half a century ago. Military men and women returned from serving in the “longest war” in Afghanistan a couple of years ago. In each case, some of these veterans are broken and disheartened. Combat is horrible, and the hurts are deep. Pray for these valiant warriors as you reflect on their sacrifice. Ask the Lord to comfort and restore those who have served, as well as their families, from whatever generation and whichever war. The Healer, whose loving sacrifice offers eternal life to all who believe, is able to bind up their wounds and make their hearts whole. As Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends“ (John 15:13). Give thanks to the Lord today for His sacrifice and pray for His protection over the American service members who put their lives at risk each day.
