Election Day: Pray and Vote for Our Future

The next era of American leadership is about to begin.

PRAY FIRST for God’s hand to be on the nation during this pivotal time in history and that His perfect plan will be accomplished through the results of the election.

He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding. – Danial 2:22

After what feels like months of campaigning, Tuesday, November 5, will mark the beginning of the next era of American leadership. With the nation heading to the polls, pray with us as America faces the future with two different visions of how to address the needs of our country.

Election Day

With over 161 million registered voters and ballots to be counted, elections can be a complex and drawn-out process, sometimes taking days or even weeks to finalize. This delay can be attributed to various factors, such as the sheer volume of votes, the need for meticulous counting, and the verification of results.

Historical examples highlight some of the intricacies of the electoral process. For instance, in the 2000 U.S. Presidential election, the outcome hinged on the results from Florida, leading to a protracted legal battle and a recount that lasted over a month. Similarly, the 2020 U.S. Presidential election saw extended counting periods due to the unprecedented number of mail-in ballots, which required additional time to process and verify. Another notable instance is the 1960 election between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon, where the results were extremely close, and allegations of voter fraud and irregularities further complicated the process.

What to Expect

A high voter turnout is anticipated, with many voters casting their ballots early or by mail. Election Day is expected to be highly competitive and closely watched. This is leading to concerns about how the results will be tabulated.

The outcome may hinge on a few critical swing states. The counting and verification processes will be heavily scrutinized, and some key officials in these states have said that they expect to have most ballots counted on Tuesday, but it may extend to the end of the week depending on volume and whether they need to recount or reverify any of them.

Major news organizations will be analyzing the national vote tallies all day Tuesday. Based on the totals combined with statistical models, they often declare a winner, even if not all votes are in, if they deem that the trailing candidate cannot catch up.

Given the tight race, the outcome might not be immediately clear, and both campaigns have indicated that they are preparing for possible legal challenges and recounts.

What Can We Do?

During election periods, it is essential to pray for election officials who bear the responsibility of ensuring a fair and transparent process. Together, we can pray for God to grant them wisdom, patience, and integrity as they navigate the complexities of vote counting and result verification. Additionally, pray for peace and understanding among the electorate, which can help maintain a calm and respectful atmosphere during potentially tense times.

Trust that God is at work during elections and have faith in His sovereignty and perfect will. We, as believers, have comfort in our knowledge that, regardless of the outcome, God’s plan is ultimately for the good of His people. This trust can be nurtured through prayer, scripture reading, and fellowship with other believers, reinforcing the belief that God’s purposes will prevail, even during uncertainty.

HOW THEN SHOULD WE PRAY:

— Pray for the men and women overseeing the election counting and tabulating of the ballots, as well as all who may be involved in the election process, including volunteers, officials, law enforcement, and judges. The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all. Psalm 103:19
— Pray for all Americans who are going to the polls.  If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. James 1:5

CONSIDER THESE ITEMS FOR PRAYER:

  • Pray for the many elections, local, state, and federal, happening across the nation.
  • Pray for the men and women who are working at each polling station, may God protect them and give them guidance in a high stress setting.
  • Pray for integrity in the hearts of those overseeing and participating in the election process—officials, volunteers, and leaders.
  • Pray for God’s healing over the divisions in our nation.
