All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord, and all your saints shall bless you. – Psalm 145:10
If your assignment was to sit down with your gratitude journal and list what you are thankful for in alphabetical order, an item for each letter, could you do it? A might stand for abundance, and B may be for bread—the daily kind. For C, you could choose God’s consistency. You know, from Ephesians 1:3, that you have been “blessed in Christ with every spiritual blessing.”
Some people might consider that Psalm 145 seems rather “choppy.” What you need to know is that it is actually an acrostic. The verses begin with the successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet, the Aleph-Bet, from Aleph to Tav. All the way through are reasons to praise the Lord. Children would sing this psalm as a means of memorizing their alphabet. While they were learning, they would also discover the character of God, reminding them, as today’s verse says, that even voiceless created things like plants, or noisy ones like animals, can utter praise to the Lord.
Dr. Jerry Morrissey says, “Awareness of God’s love in even the minutest details of life causes one to become expansive. It is not enough to keep this awareness to oneself.” If awareness is expanded, so also must be your praise. Dr. Morrissey continues, “Praise or recognition of God might begin private but it expands and expands until it includes the universe and beyond. … God does not need our praise. We do. It adds nothing to his greatness, but makes us realize what a finely tuned creation we are and what a magnificent environment we live in.” So from A to Z, praise the Lord today for Who He is, giving Him the thanks He is due.
