Funds go to increase access to fruits and vegetables in underserved communities.
The Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced an investment of more than $46 million to address food insecurity in underserved areas and promote healthy diets through improved access to fruits and vegetables. The funding supports the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture’s (NIFA) Community Food Projects Competitive Grants Program (CFPCGP) and Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP).
“Healthy, safe, and affordable food is essential for a strong start for children and a healthy life for all of us,” said Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Xochitl Torres Small. “Through these investments, the Biden Harris Administration is investing in healthy food options for people no matter where they live and supporting stronger local and regional food systems.”
The investment includes $36.3 million for 14 GusNIP Nutrition Incentive projects that provide income-eligible families with fruit and vegetable purchasing incentives and $5.2 million for 11 Produce Prescription programs, which offer fresh produce to improve health outcomes.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Deputy Secretary Torres Small to seek God’s wisdom as she promotes health nutritional alternatives in underserved communities.
- For Secretary Vilsack and USDA officials as they determine where to invest taxpayer dollars for nutritional health.
