The world’s largest surface freshwater ecosystem is found in the American Great Lakes. What lies beneath some of the waters is just as important—salt! Under Lake Erie, there is a 16-square-mile area known as the Cargill Salt Mine. Not far away is the Morton Salt Mine. Together, these resources produce tons of salt. It is estimated that the Cargill mine harvests about 12,000 tons of salt each day. Much of what Cargill produces is used to de-ice roadways during winter. You are probably more familiar with the round, dark blue box of Morton Salt, which makes its way to your table.
It may take tons of salt to de-ice the roads in a frozen community, but it takes only a few grains to enhance the flavor of food. Jesus has called you to be both salt and light (Matthew 5:13-14). According to Pastor James Smith, God uses these two traits in you to both attract and transform. In 2 Kings 2:21, salt was used to purify a body of water. In today’s verse, Jesus says to have salt in yourselves. You need to use this salt as a preservative in the face of what would steal your peace.
Salt has multiple purposes: purifying, preserving, and flavoring. A bit of salt on the tongue makes a person thirsty. The Lord has an intended purpose for the salt of your life. Maintain your saltiness, and be ready for God to work through you according to His will. Follow the direction of the Holy Spirit as you spend time in His Word and in prayer. Let your light shine, let your salt be purposeful, and be at peace with one another.
