Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week, encouraging him to leverage the recent killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar to enact a permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and secure the release of the remaining hostages held by the terrorist group. Israel killed the militant political leader last week, and Secretary Blinken said this was an opportunity to offer new structure to civilians in Gaza, providing a chance for them to recover from the ongoing violence in the densely populated region.
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that the U.S. secretary of state highlighted the importance of ending “the conflict in Gaza in a way that provides lasting security for Israelis and Palestinians alike.
“He discussed the importance of charting a new path forward in the post-conflict period that allows Palestinians to rebuild their lives and provides governance, security, and reconstruction for Gaza,” Spokesperson Miller said.
