They predict more assassination attempts without changes.
An independent panel released its report last week, documenting its findings after investigating the Secret Service’s performance during recent assassination attempts against former President Donald Trump.
The panel, formed by President Joe Biden after the assassination attempt on July 13, commended the bravery of each individual agent who puts their lives on the line for federal leaders. However, with regard to the leadership and organization of the Secret Service, they were critical of leaders for creating a “bureaucratic, complacent and static” work culture.
“The Secret Service does not perform at the elite levels needed to discharge its critical mission,” the panel wrote, adding that without “fundamental reform,” similar close calls “can and will happen again.”
Secret Service Acting Director Ronald Rowe responded to the report, saying his agency respects “the work of the Independent Review Panel and will carefully examine the report and recommendations released today.” He added that the agency has already started making changes in light of the attempted assassination.
