Perfect Peace

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.         Isaiah 26:3

In all of the years when Major League Baseball has played a World Series, there has been only one perfect game. In Game 5 in the 1956 competition between the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers, pitcher Don Larsen threw a no-hitter. Not a single Dodger was able to reach base. There were “no hits, walks, hit batters, uncaught third strikes, catcher’s interference, fielder’s obstruction, or fielding errors,” according to the statisticians. Larsen had delivered a 97-pitch masterpiece. Larsen said, “I never had such good control in all my life as I had in that game.” His mind was absolutely fixated on making every pitch a winner.

When it comes to peace, today’s verse says perfection is a promise of God — but it is a conditional promise! In his commentary, theologian Matthew Henry says, “It is the character of every good man that he trusts in God, puts himself under his guidance and government, and depends upon him that it shall be greatly to his advantage to do so. Those that trust in God must have their minds stayed upon him, must trust him at all times, under all events, must firmly and faithfully adhere to him, with an entire satisfaction in him; and such as do so God will keep in perpetual peace, and that peace shall keep them.“

Henry says being kept in perfect peace includes “inward peace, outward peace, peace with God, peace of conscience, peace at all times, under all events,” and is the kind of peace that ensures you will win the spiritual battles that confront you. Nothing will be able to disrupt your confidence. “God is my strength and power, and He makes my way perfect” (2 Samuel 22:33, NKJV).

36 You have given me the shield of your salvation,

37 You gave a wide place for my steps under me,
    and my feet did not slip;
