The Roswell area experienced washed-out roads and two deaths, while several were hospitalized.
Flash flooding hits southern New Mexico over the weekend with a record-breaking, monsoon-like amount of rain. Roads were washed out, and hundreds of people were rescued by the New Mexico National Guard. State police reported at least two people were killed in the flooding, and dozens were hospitalized.
Governor Michele Lujan Grisham declared a state of emergency for the county. She also stated, “I’m grateful for the swift actions taken by local authorities and our state departments to help communities in need. My administration is on the ground assisting and will continue to provide robust support for relief efforts.”
Roswell Mayor Tim Jennings said a lot of road repair work is needed as city officials assess the damage. He asked that people stay off the streets, “We have so much damage in streets, you know, I think we might have eight or 10 bridges already identified that we have to replace. And you know, those are, you know, $5 million a piece.”
The National Weather Service forecasts that the remainder of the week should be warm and dry.
