The airline prevented 128 Orthodox Jews from boarding connecting flights.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) fined German airline company Lufthansa $4 million for discriminating against passengers who were Orthodox Jews.
In May 2022, a few passengers were being unruly on a flight from New York to Frankfurt, the stop for the final connecting flight to Budapest. The crew informed security that the passengers were Orthodox Jews. This led to security placing a hold on the connecting flights of all 128 Orthodox Jews aboard the first flight, even though they had no connection to the few misbehaving passengers. The Transportation Department received 40 discrimination complaints from the passengers as a result of this incident.
“No one should face discrimination when they travel, and today’s action sends a clear message to the airline industry that we are prepared to investigate and take action whenever passengers’ civil rights are violated,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said.
