State Department adds pressure after two incidents in Canada last year.
The State Department announced that a committee from the government of India met with U.S. officials in Washington this week to discuss ongoing investigations into an assassination attempt on a Sikh separatist last year. The government of India has had a history of discrimination against Indian citizens who follow the Sikh faith. A few prominent members of the Sikh faith in northern India advocate for separating the area from India entirely, creating a new country that is more welcoming of Sikhism.
The Canadian government believes that a member of the Indian government orchestrated the assassination of a Sikh separatist advocate in Canada last year, prompting the country to expel six Indian diplomats. India responded by expelling Canadian diplomats. After the U.S. and Canadian governments foiled another assassination plot against a U.S.-Canada citizen last year, the United States urged India to form a committee to investigate alongside a similar investigation being conducted by U.S. officials.
The State Department said that the Indian Enquiry Committee “is actively investigating the individual” suspected of organizing the plot and that India had informed the U.S. it was looking into “other linkages of the former government employee.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For U.S. officials as they engage Canadian and Indian diplomats and investigate the assassination plot.
- For Secretary of State Blinken and other U.S. leaders as they seek to ensure the safety of Sikh individuals from India.
