EPA Announces Grants to Improve Water Systems in Small and Rural Communities

Federal funding intended to provide technical assistance and training to guarantee safe drinking water and effective wastewater treatment in underserved areas.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced the availability of up to $30.7 million in grant funding targeted at providing technical assistance and training to small drinking water and wastewater systems—many of which serve rural communities. This funding is also intended to support private well owners in improving water quality. With more than 90 percent of drinking water systems in the U.S. serving fewer than 10,000 people, these small systems often face the issues of aging infrastructure and limited financial resources.

“Accomplishing this vital mission day-in and day-out with limited resources is challenging. With $30 million in new EPA funding, technical assistance providers will help achieve public health and safe water goals for small communities,” said Bruno Pigott, EPA’s Principal Deputy Assistant Administrator for Water.

Eligible applicants for this grant include nonprofit organizations and higher education institutions. The grants will bring small water systems into compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act, improving water quality for small wastewater systems, and supporting private well owners. The application deadline for this competitive grant is November 25, 2024, with awards expected by summer 2025.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Principal Deputy Administrator Pigott to be led by the Lord as he heads the EPA’s Office of Water.
  • For Administrator Regan to seek God’s guidance as he oversees the EPA.
