Sure-Footed Faith

Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble.         Psalm 119:165

One of the least studied large mammals in North America is the mountain goat. They inhabit rugged, mountainous areas, and there are a good many herds in the mountains and coastal regions of southeastern and south-central Alaska. They are often confused with Dall sheep, but you can recognize the mountain goat by its black horns and often long, shaggy coats. Their hooves are specially designed for climbing the steep, rocky, and often slippery terrain. They are said to be among the most sure-footed of all mammals. Even the young kids seldom stumble.

Would you consider your faith to be “sure-footed?” What is it that may cause you to stumble? Today’s verse is continued evidence of the pattern of God’s divine law. You experience God’s peace and strength when you love His Word. As you internalize and implement Scripture in your life, you are less likely, as some versions of this verse say, to be offended, which is a snare of the tempter. The power of God saturates your life the more you embrace His message to you, reveling in His love with awe. Psalm 119:97 says, “Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day.”

Have you made it a priority to immerse yourself daily in studying, thinking about, and obeying God’s Word? Is Scripture so valuable to you that you cherish the time you spend delving into it? Are you allowing God’s Word and His truths to shape how you think and act? This week, spend time in Psalm 119 and notice how many ways God’s Word is addressed, how it is valued, and the promises that come through being attentive to it. Then praise God that His Word has endured across millennia, that His truths are eternal, and that, through it all, God’s love for you is revealed. Pray for the men and women who serve in America’s government to become students of the Word of God, allowing it to guide their steps.

How can a young man keep his way pure?
    By guarding it according to your word.
10 With my whole heart I seek you;
    let me not wander from your commandments!
11 I have stored up your word in my heart,
    that I might not sin against you.
12 Blessed are you, O Lord;
    teach me your statutes!
13 With my lips I declare
    all the rules of your mouth.
14 In the way of your testimonies I delight
    as much as in all riches.
15 I will meditate on your precepts
    and fix my eyes on your ways.
16 I will delight in your statutes;
    I will not forget your word.
