However, official says the Middle East is “balancing on a knife’s edge.”
Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said the United States continues to support Israel as surrounding conflicts grow even more delicate after Iran launched more than 180 missiles into Israel.
Tensions between Israel, Hamas, and Hezbollah continue to escalate. Iran, an Islamic country, has supported its neighboring Islamic governments during these conflicts. After Israel launched a ground operation into Lebanon on Monday, Iran launched its missile attack on Israel.
Deputy Secretary Campbell said that Iran’s attack was “deeply irresponsible” and warranted a “return message.” However, he said that any response must be executed extremely carefully to avoid all-out war.
“I think we recognize, as important as a response of some kind should be, there is a recognition that the region is really balancing on a knife’s edge, and real concerns about a even broader escalation or a continuing one, not just simply an exchange of sort of isolated salvos, but of more sustained hostility, which could imperil not just Israel, but our strategic interests as well,” Deputy Secretary Campbell said.
President Joe Biden said that Israel should not target Iran’s nuclear sites in retaliation.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For wisdom for Deputy Secretary Campbell and Secretary Blinken as they assess the conflicts in the Middle East.
- For the peace of Jerusalem and the safety of the Israeli, Lebanese, and Iranian people.
