The funding will reboot the Holtec Palisades reactor, the first reactor restart in U.S. history.
The Department of Energy (DOE) announced that it has finalized a $1.5 billion loan to restart the Holtec Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan. This is the first time a previously closed nuclear power plant has been approved to reopen in the United States.
Though nuclear power was widespread in the last century, the Cold War exposed concerns of potential accidents at nuclear power plants, and Congress acted accordingly. President Biden’s administration has refocused on the potential of nuclear power as they focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions since nuclear energy produces nearly zero emissions in its power generation process.
“Nuclear power is America’s largest source of carbon-free of electricity, supporting hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs across the country and will play a critical role in tackling the climate crisis and protecting public health and the environment from its impacts,” stated Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, who was formerly governor of Michigan.
