U.S. Organ Transplant System Undergoes Modernization to Improve Patient Care

HRSA awards multi-vendor contracts to enhance transparency, IT systems, and governance, benefiting over 100,000 patients on the organ transplant waitlist.

Recently, the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) announced the first-ever multi-vendor contract awards to modernize the U.S. organ transplant system, aiming to improve transparency, performance, and governance for the more than 100,000 people on the waitlist.

Historically, the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) has faced criticism over transparency, potential conflicts of interest, and IT issues. By shifting from a single vendor to multiple contractors, this modernization effort seeks to enhance the system’s operations, better serve patients, and align with the bipartisan Securing the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network Act signed in 2023.

“One person is added to the waitlist every 10 minutes. Each one relies on and deserves the best care possible,” said HRSA Administrator Carole Johnson. “Today’s action marks a significant advancement…to make sure the nation’s organ matching system works for patients, donors, and the families who depend on the OPTN for that life-saving call.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Administrator Johnson to look to God for guidance as she heads the Health Resources and Services Administration.
  • For Secretary Becerra to be discerning as he oversees the Department of Health and Human Services.
