Chair Comer suggests an abuse of power in the flying President Zelensky to Pennsylvania.
President Biden’s Defense Department flew Ukrainian President Vlodomyr Zelensky to Pennsylvania this week for a visit to a munitions factory, alongside Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Josh Shapiro. Senator Bob Casey and Representative Matt Cartwright of Pennsylvania were also included in the Scranton tour.
Representative James Comer of Kentucky, chair of the House Oversight Committee, sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland regarding the committee opening an investigation into the military transport, which, if taxpayer funded, violates federal law.
Chair Comer stated, “In 2019, the… House of Representatives impeached President Donald J. Trump for abuse of power under the theory that he attempted to use a foreign leader—Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky—to benefit his 2020 presidential campaign, despite a lack of any evidence of wrongdoing on the part of President Trump.“
He continued, “The Biden-Harris Administration recently flew the same foreign leader—Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky—on an American-taxpayer-funded flight to Pennsylvania, a battleground state in the upcoming 2024 presidential election, which has been described as the ‘trickiest battleground for Vice President Kamala Harris to win.‘ The Committee seeks to determine whether the Biden-Harris Administration attempted to use a foreign leader to benefit Vice President Harris’s presidential campaign and, if so, necessarily committed an abuse of power.“
Members of Congress, including Representative Susan Wild of Pennsylvania, were unhappy to have been excluded from the Ukrainian president’s tour. House Speaker Johnson also pointed out that no one from his party was invited to the event.
The House speaker said President Zelensky essentially “made a campaign stop on behalf of the Democratic Party and effectively have given a tacit endorsement to Kamala Harris.” He added, “That’s not what we need our allies doing, or any foreign nation. I think it’s election interference.”
