Sends legislation to president for signature to avert shutdown.
The House and Senate both passed a continuing resolution on Wednesday that will fund the federal government through December 20. The fiscal year deadline was September 30, and the three-month stopgap legislation avoids a government shutdown. The president is expected to sign the measure before the Monday deadline.
The legislation also includes additional funding for Secret Service protection for presidential and vice presidential candidates. This measure comes in the wake of a second attempt to assassinate former President Donald Trump in two months.
Senate Majority Leader Schumer was gratified that Congress got “the job done with some time to spare.” He said, “This is a good outcome for the country. There will be no shutdown.”
Federal legislators were motivated not only by the fiscal year deadline but also by the upcoming recess as they return to their home states and districts to campaign before November’s election.
