Election officials remain concerned by USPS ability to process influx.
U.S. Postal Service (USPS) Postmaster General Louis Dejoy said he is “personally fully committed” to deliver 2024 presidential election ballots in an ample time frame, responding to concerns raised by local election officials.
Several officials from the National Association of State Election Directors recently sent a letter to the postmaster, questioning “USPS’s ability to deliver election mail in a timely and accurate manner.” The use of mail-in election ballots for the U.S. presidential election has increased from 21 percent of votes in 2016 to 46 percent of all votes cast during the pandemic in 2020. Some officials expect this number to increase in the upcoming election.
Postmaster Dejoy responded with a letter stating that USPS will deploy ballot monitors and others in all mail processing, retail and delivery units “to reinforce and amplify our policies and procedures on the ground” starting on October 1.
The USPS is currently delivering mail on an average of 2.7 days but continues “to recommend as a common-sense measure that voters should mail their completed ballot before Election Day, and at least one week prior to their state’s deadline.”
