Issue 665 – Federal Branches

Praying for Our Leaders in Government

Executive Branch: Pray for the President and his Administration

The Treasury Department reported that the interest on the $35.3 national debt has topped $1 trillion this year, an increase of 30 percent over last year. The expenditure for interest on the nation’s debt is third behind Social Security and Medicare.

Pray for U.S. governing officials to consider the national debt as they deliberate over appropriations for federal agencies.

Legislative Branch: Pray for Senators and Representatives in Congress

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, along with other senators in his party, wrote to Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young, calling for all federal agencies that utilize artificial intelligence (AI) in “consequential decisions” to have civil rights offices to prevent “algorithmic discrimination.”

Pray for members of Congress to be prudent as they urge safeguards for various uses of AI.

PRAY FOR CONGRESSIONAL COMMITTEES

The Senate Judiciary Committee, chaired by Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois, held a hearing this week on hate crimes and antisemitism. The House already passed the bipartisan Antisemitism Awareness Act, while the U.S. Senate is considering the Countering Antisemitism Act. The House has also increased federal oversight of college campuses due to increased antisemitism.

Pray for the chairs and members of committees as they assess the measures that may mitigate the rise in antisemitism.

Judicial Branch: Pray for Supreme Court Justices and Federal Judges

The District of Columbia U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is hearing the lawsuit from TikTok and Byte Dance against the U.S. Department of Justice over the law that would ban the social media platform if it continues to be owned by a Chinese company. Congress included the restriction in a foreign aid package, intending to prevent users’ data and information from being gathered by China or other adversarial nations.

Pray for discernment for the appellate judges as they hear testimony and claims surrounding free speech and foreign ownership of social media platforms.
