General Michael Langley, USMC
Commander, U.S. Africa Command
Michael Elliott Langley was born in 1961 or 1962 in Shreveport, Louisiana. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Arlington and later received master’s degrees from the Naval War College and U.S. Army War College. He was commissioned into the U.S. Marine Corps as a second lieutenant.
Langley has commanded at every level from platoon to regiment. He was deployed in Okinawa, Japan, and served in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
Prior to his current position, he served as the Deputy Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic and Deputy Commander, Marine Force Command and Marine Forces Northern Command.
He was nominated for promotion to four-star general and assigned as Commander, United States Africa Command, assuming his position in August 2022.

General Michael Langley spoke at the installation of the new commander of U.S. Space Forces in Europe-Space Forces Africa, Brigadier General Jacob Middleton.
“The guardians here … bring a level of technical expertise to a domain that is rapidly advancing and changing,” General Langley said. “We need you now more than ever on this global scene.”
The commander of U.S. Africa Command said that the guardians have collaborated with AFRICOM, providing unclassified information, such as commercial satellite imagery, to assist with issues including cross-border violence and disaster relief. “You know what, (China) doesn’t do that,” General Langley said. “The Russian Federation doesn’t do that.
General Langley added that the partnerships and enhanced cooperation in Europe will “take this command to new heights, or I should say, a new orbit.”
