Annual budget negotiations are ramping up as Congress seeks to keep the federal government funded beyond the September 30 fiscal year deadline. Federal legislators are considering stopgap funding to avert a government shutdown.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson sent a proposition to a House floor vote this week, attaching a law requiring proof of citizenship for voter registration in a bill offering six months of government funding.
“House Republicans are taking a critically important step to keep the federal government funded and to secure our federal election process,” Speaker Johnson said. “Congress has a responsibility to do both, and we must ensure that only American citizens can decide American elections.”
This bill is unlikely to make it past the Senate, and even with strong support may not even make it past the House floor.
“As we have said repeatedly, avoiding a government shutdown requires bipartisanship, not a bill drawn up by one party,” Senators Chuck Schumer and Patty Murray jointly stated.
