Judge Adrienne Nelson

Adrienne Camille Nelson was born in 1967 in Kansas City, Missouri. She received an undergraduate degree from the University of Arkansas and earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Texas School of Law.
Nelson worked as an analyst in insurance before becoming an attorney in private practice. She then served as a public defender. She became a senior attorney for student mediation at Portland State University and was an adjunct professor at Lewis and Clark Law School.
Nelson was appointed to county circuit court by Governor Kulongoski, a position to which she was reelected. Governor Brown appointed her to the state supreme court, and Nelson also won election to the following term.
President Biden nominated Nelson as a judge for the Oregon U.S. District Court in July 2022. Her nomination was returned and she was reappointed by the president in January 2023. The Senate confirmed her in February, and she received her commission later that month.

District Judge Adrienne Nelson is hearing the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) challenge of a merger between Kroger and Albertsons. The FTC claims the acquisition will reduce competition and lead to higher prices in the grocery sector.
The grocery chains claim that they need to merge in order to compete with the likes of Walmart, Costco, and Amazon’s Whole Foods. They maintain that shoppers often purchase food at a variety of stores, not only large chains.
Arizona, California, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Wyoming, and the District of Columbia have joined the FTC in challenging the merger, while Colorado and Washington have each filed separate lawsuits against it.
