DOI Distributes $774 Million for Abandoned Gas Wells in 21 States

The department continues the years-long cleanup process across the country.

The Department of the Interior (DOI) announced $775 million to plug abandoned oil and gas wells, awarding the funding to 21 states.

Abandoned oil and gas wells pose safety risks to the environment and human health, releasing toxic gases into the air and contaminating the soil and groundwater around it. The department has been working to close thousands of abandoned wells across the United States and has already distributed $900 million for local workforces to close over 8,200 wells.

“These investments are good for our climate, for the health of our communities, and for American workers,” said Secretary Deb Haaland. “With this third round of additional funding, states will put more people to work to clean up these toxic sites, reduce methane emissions, and safeguard our environment.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Haaland to receive God’s guidance as she heads the Interior Department.
  • For U.S. officials as they seek to clean up toxic areas and close up orphaned wells.
