House speaker calls ICE’s inability to locate hundreds of thousands of unaccompanied minors “one of the biggest scandals in American history.”
The Department of Homeland Security’s Inspector General reported that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that nearly 300,000 migrant children in the United States do not have immigration court dates. The 14-page report found that ICE had not served over 291,000 unaccompanied children (UCs) who were released to sponsors as of May 2024. The 32,000 minors who were served have not appeared for their court dates.
The Inspector General’s report stated, “Without an ability to monitor the location and status of UCs, ICE has no assurance UCs are safe from trafficking, exploitation, or forced labor.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson responded to the findings, saying, “This administration’s failure to secure our border is facilitating what is the equivalent of a modern-day slavery operation.” He added, “This is one of the biggest scandals in American history; it’s one of the most tragic.”
Immigration and border security are key issues in this year’s presidential election.
