North Carolina Joins IRS Direct File Program

It is the 6th state to participate in the free federal tax filing tool.

North Carolina joined the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Direct File program last week, becoming the sixth state to adopt the online tax filing tool. The other states currently participating in the Direct File program are Oregon, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, and Connecticut.

“Filing taxes is often stressful, expensive, and time-consuming for North Carolina taxpayers and families. The IRS Direct File tool helps remove unnecessary hurdles and fees by allowing taxpayers to file directly with the IRS for free, keeping more money in their pockets,” North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper stated.

The IRS began developing its new tax filing system through funding from the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. After piloting the free service in 12 states, the IRS officially launched the program this year, allowing state governments to voluntarily enroll in the program ahead of the 2025 tax season.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for state officials as they consider participating in the IRS’ Direct File program.
  • For leaders in the IRS and Treasury Department as they handle the nation’s finances.
